Almería Plaza

Public Spaces

Public Spaces

The plaza’s renovation is based on a tribute to the Roman Empire, which ruled our area during the early centuries. The plaza is made entirely of white Macael marble.

Upon arriving at the square, we are greeted by a staircase with massive steps, approximately 10 steps high. Upon climbing them, we are led into an impressive space, opened by six Corinthian columns, almost 7 meters high, with an architrave resting on the columns where the Roman inscription reads: “Plaza Almeriensis. Honor et Patrimonium Populi Nostri.” This square is now called Plaza Almería.

Next, we find a Roman pool presided over by the Chirivello, the first statue found in our region from the Roman Empire in the 1st century, made of Macael marble and currently housed in the Almería Museum. The sculpture represents Bacchus, the god of the vine, wine, and mystical delirium. Inside, we find a replica of the planetary mosaic, a mosaic depicting the stars, considered deities by the Romans. This Roman-style mosaic is surrounded by 14 3-meter-high Tuscan-style columns.

Finally, four Ionic-style columns support the main fountain, which is presided over by a massive sculpture of Neptune (the Roman god of the sea and water) almost 3 meters high, made from a single piece of marble
